Sailing from Langkawi to Thailand

Expert Tips for a Smooth Journey

Sailing from Langkawi to Thailand is a popular route for yachting enthusiasts, offering a mix of serene waters, vibrant marine life, and beautiful islands to explore. Whether you're planning a leisurely cruise or a more adventurous journey, these tips will help you navigate the waters between Malaysia and Thailand smoothly.

Customs & Immigration

Langkawi Exit

Exiting Malaysia from Langkawi is a straightforward process. The main immigration point is located at the Jetty in Kuah Town, near the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. Our agent will meet you to guide you through the process, which typically takes around 30 minutes.

Koh Lipe Entry

When you arrive in Koh Lipe, Thailand, the immigration process is handled on the beach at Pattaya Beach. While the process can take a bit longer, our local agent will manage all the paperwork, making it as seamless as possible. It’s important to arrive before 4 PM to ensure same-day processing.

Ferry Option

If you're not sailing, there is also a daily ferry service between Langkawi and Koh Lipe. The ferry departs from Telaga Harbour in Langkawi and takes about 90 minutes to reach Koh Lipe. This is a popular option for tourists, but note that ferry services may be limited during the low season (May to October).

Navigational Tips

Timing Your Sail

During the Northeast Monsoon (November to March), the winds are generally favorable in the morning, making it the best time to sail. Plan to set sail early and aim to arrive at your destination by early afternoon to take advantage of calmer seas.

Anchoring Tips

Plan to anchor on the southwest or west sides of islands during the Northeast Monsoon to avoid strong winds and rough seas. Be mindful of the tides and allow swing room, as the tidal currents can cause your yacht to shift position.

Tide Considerations

The region experiences two tides per day, with a difference of up to 3 meters between low and high tide. Check tide tables regularly and plan your anchoring and beach landings accordingly. High tide is generally the best time to land your dinghy, as it makes it easier to pull it ashore.

Mooring and Buoys

Marine Parks

In marine parks such as Koh Rok and Koh Racha, anchoring is prohibited to protect the coral reefs. Instead, use the mooring buoys provided. Always dive on the buoy to check its condition before securing your yacht. Orange buoys are typically well-maintained and suitable for charter yachts.

Private Buoys

In popular areas like Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe, you may encounter privately owned buoys. It's best to avoid these as you might be asked to vacate the spot during the night. Stick to the public mooring buoys, which are clearly marked.
